Listserv FAQ

Basic Questions - For Beginners and the Curious

Q: What is a Listserv?
A:
A Listserv is powerful Internet tool that allows people to communicate efficiently and economically via e-mail. Once subscribed to a Listserv, you can exchange ideas, ask questions and discuss issues with a large group of people.

Q: Do I need special software or training to participate with the Director's Roundtable Listserv?
A: No. You must know how to send and receive e-mail messages. To access the archives, you need a web browser. You must have access to the Internet.

Q: Who is eligible to join the Director's Roundtable Listserv?
A: To subscribe to the Director's Roundtable Listserv, you must be a member of the Director's Roundtable. If you would like to learn more about the Director's Roundtable, contact Cheri Hildreth Watts, University of Louisville.

Q: How do I subscribe to the Director's Roundtable Listserv?
A: Send an e-mail to listserv@uabdpo.dpo.uab.edu

Include the following text in the BODY of the e-mail, NOT THE SUBJECT LINE (without quotes): "SUBSCRIBE ROUNDERS John Doe"

Intermediate Questions - For Current Listserv Subscribers

Q: How do I send a message to the list?
A: Send an e-mail to rounders@uab.edu

This is called "sending mail to the list," because you send mail to a single address and the Listserv makes copies for all the people who have subscribed.

A: Send an e-mail to listserv@uabdpo.dpo.uab.edu

Include the following text in the BODY of the e-mail, NOT THE SUBJECT LINE (without quotes): "SIGNOFF ROUNDERS"

Make sure no other text is included in the e-mail (no footers, nothing in the subject line, etc...). For an example Click Here.

Q: When I send a message to the list will I receive a copy of my message automatically?
A: No. (read the question below to learn how to change this).

Q: How can I be sure my message was distributed?

Include the following text in the BODY of the e-mail, NOT THE SUBJECT LINE (without quotes): "SET ROUNDERS REPRO"

This command will send you a copy of your own message so that you can see the message was distributed.

Q: How can I access the available archive files online?
A: The full archives of the Rounders listserv are now available through an easy to use web-based interface. Access the archives by going to https://listserv.uab.edu/scgi-bin/wa?A0=ROUNDERS.

This site requires your e-mail address and a password, so the first step for a new user is to click on the words "Get Password" and follow the instructions.

Then you can log in and take advantage of the web interface for Rounders.   Keep track of your password so you don't forget.
